  • How does You.com protect my privacy?

You.com never sells your data to advertisers or follows you around the internet.

You.com gives you the option to choose between a customized search experience through personal mode or an entirely private one through our private mode. Our private mode offers the most private search experience of any search engine. In private mode, You.com never stores your queries, preferences, or locations. That also means that localized queries (such as “best restaurants near me”) won’t work. In private mode, we only save whether the service is used at all, in order to prevent attacks and misuse of our servers.

In private mode, while we do have to send anonymized query data to Microsoft, Yelp, weather services, and other apps, these queries come from the You.com IP address, so these partners won’t know who the query originated from.

Even in personal mode, we strive to only store the minimal data necessary to make your experience better.

  • Does the Chrome extension invade my privacy?

You.com had two extensions. The first changes your default search engine to you.com and has no read access.

    Download here.

The second extension uses those permissions to direct your search to your selected search engine.

    Download here.

This extension is open source. View the code here .

You can verify permissions for each one during the installation when it lists its requirements.

  • Does You.com use cookies?

You.com does not use any external trackers, such as Google Analytics. Our personal mode sets cookies to enable authentication and customization of your search profile. All these cookies are first-party cookies and are not used to track you around the web. They only enable You.com’s customization features. We don’t use any cookies in private mode.

  • Does it matter if I use a VPN to access You.com?

It may change the results for some of the integrations. Weather, for instance, may not know where you are.

  • Does setting preferred sources limit me to only seeing results from those sources?

Setting your preferred sources allows us to rank your search results according to your preferences. You will always get a list of all the results that are relevant to your query, whether you have set your preferred sources or not.

  • How can I change my password?

Log out, click on “Don’t remember your password?” in the login page, and then reset it via email.

  • Can you hide explicit results on You.com?

SafeSearch filters webpage results for adult content. The default is Moderate, which returns webpages with adult text, but not adult or not safe for work (NSFW) images or videos. The Off mode returns webpages with adult text and images, and the Strict mode filters out any webpage with adult text, images, or videos.

Joining You.com‘s beta will help you be higher on the list to get your username first. We are first focused on making the search great, but other features will come in the future. Stay tuned!

You.com never shares your data with third parties. If you’d like to delete your profile and your data you can email us at [email protected] and we will promptly take care of it.

Private Search

  • How does You.com compare to other search engines?

Our aim is to make your life easier by summarizing the web for you, eliminating the need to open multiple tabs. We’ll also allow you to define your preferred sources, and whenever possible, show you results from the sources you prefer first— saving you time.

  • When I am not in private mode, do you share my data with anybody?

You.com never sells your data to advertisers or follows you around the internet.

If you’re not in private mode, we do send your IP address to some partners when you query for localized results, such as “restaurants near me” or “weather here”. For these types of queries, we send the minimum amount of information needed to get you useful results, which is your IP address. If you don’t want your IP address shared for these types of queries, you would need to be in private mode and then rephrase your query.

  • I have a privacy-related suggestion / feedback. How can I share it with you?

We would love to hear from you. Please contact us at [email protected].

  • Does the Chrome extension invade my privacy?

No. There are currently two extensions made by you.com:

    1. You.com
    2. You.com | Search, chat, and create with AI

The first doesn't require any access. It simply changes your default search engine to you.com.

    Download here.

The second is less privacy focused. It requires more permissions to direct your search to your selected search engine such as YouCode, YouChat or Google.

In spirit of our principles of trust, facts and kindness, we have made this extension open source. View the code here, including how we're using these enhanced permissions.

You can verify permissions for each one during the installation when it lists its requirements. We do not ask for any permission that is not needed to fulfill the single purpose of the extension.

Below are the justifications of why we need each permission.

    • declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess: Needed to forward the user to the appropriate search engine (the one the user selected) in the UI.
    • storage justification: Storage is required to store the current default search engine.
    • Host permission justification: Host is needed to forward the user to the appropriate search engine (the one the user selected) in the UI.

YouChat

  • What is YouChat?

YouChat is an AI-powered conversational search assistant developed by You.com that utilizes a language model developed by You.com. It’s designed to provide natural-sounding accurate explanations, cited sources, and interactive apps on various topics. The AI can answer general questions, explain things, suggest ideas, translate, summarize text, compose emails, and write code for you. It is powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, allowing you to have human-like conversations.

To start using YouChat, simply sign up for an account.

  • What technology is YouChat built on?

YouChat is built off of the combination of existing large language models and our in-house technology.

  • How does YouChat work?

YouChat is an AI that utilizes machine learning to understand user intent and query and assist with a wide range of tasks, provide in-depth explanations and discussions on a wide range of topics. It is available on every search and free to use. Simply type a question or request into the box and watch as the bot replies. To improve the accuracy of responses, you may utilize prompts that give bot more context to what you are trying to accomplish. Some general tips include:

    • Use precise and clear prompts
    • Avoid long sentences with multiple subpoints, use short and easy-to-understand sentences instead
    • Ask specific questions and explain the context of the question to generate better responses
    • Be mindful of word choice in prompts, use easy-to-understand words and avoid jargon or slang
    • Avoid asking questions with yes/no answers or very general questions, try to ask more specific questions.
  • What are prompts and how will prompts help me get more accurate results?

Prompts are short text pieces that help guide a language model to generate more accurate and relevant responses. By providing a prompt, you can focus YouChat on a specific topic and reduce the likelihood of getting irrelevant or nonsensical results. Longer, more creative prompts can help you get more accurate results by providing the language model with context to work with and by narrowing down the range of possible responses.

  • How much does YouChat cost?

YouChat is currently free! We’re working on improving our chat functionality to create the best AI chat platform possible. Start by creating a You.com account to unlock the full potential of the chatbot's capabilities. You can also help spread the word by sharing it with a friend. Additionally, you can screenshot your favorite responses and chats on social media and tag us @YouSearchEngine with the hashtag #youchat.

  • What if I notice errors in YouChat responses?

Since YouChat is constantly learning from huge amounts of online information, it may sometimes get some answers wrong. The You.com AI is always improving, so it is considered “in beta” for the time being. Use 👍👎 to provide feedback about responses and help us improve the model.

  • How does YouChat differ from AI chat platforms like ChatGPT?

YouChat is different from AI chat platforms like ChatGPT in a few ways. To start, YouChat is powered by You.com and incorporates large language models and YouApps (custom applications) that provide multimodal results such as video, image, or chart. Second, YouChat cites sources of information that you can verify by clicking on the citation link. Third, YouChat has up-to-date information from the Internet, so you can get the most accurate information from today’s web results.

  • How can I get the most out of YouChat?

To get the most out of YouChat, it is important to be specific (and creative!) when asking questions and to provide relevant context. When switching context, it also helps to start a completely new search rather than continuously prompt YouChat with unrelated context (remember it works based on the previous context you provided). This will help YouChat focus on the task and provide more accurate and relevant responses. Additionally, YouChat can be used to generate text for a wide range of topics, so it can be useful to provide prompts or give it instructions on what kind of text to generate. Finally, since YouChat is constantly learning, it is important to provide feedback on the responses it provides to help it become smarter and more useful. Use 👍👎 to provide feedback about responses and help us improve the model.

  • Who can I reach out to if I am experiencing problems or would like to provide feedback?

You can send us an email at [email protected], Join our Slack community or submit a request.

  • What are some of the best questions I can ask in YouChat?

Every chat is unique to you! While some of our most frequently-used topics on YouChat have been food, cooking, art, and web development, you can use YouChat for whatever topics interest you the most. Some sample questions you can try include:

    • What do you think about [topic]?
    • What is the most important thing to you in [topic]?
    • What do you think are the biggest challenges or opportunities in [topic]?
    • How do you approach [topic]?
    • What have you learned from your experience with [topic]?

    • What are your thoughts on [topic]?
    • What do you think will be the future of [topic]?
    • What do you wish more people knew about [topic]?

YouChat is part of the You.com search engine. Here are complete instructions to make You.com (with YouChat) your default search engine for your preferred web browser.

  • Does YouChat track users’ personal information from Chrome extensions?

The You.com Chrome extension, including the YouChat feature, does not save passwords or browsing history. This extension is open-source and can be found on GitHub. You can check lines 41-44 in the manifest page to confirm that the extension does not have permission to access any personal data. Additionally, the Chrome developer page lists the permissions used by the extension, none of which allow tracking of personal data.

Our carbon neutral workforce claim is based on average 2018 trade-adjusted U.S. per capita emissions. It includes all full-time employees for the period from January 1 – December 31, 2021. YouAgent

  • How does YouAgent compare to other LLMs, such as GPT-4?
    • We find that YouAgent generally outperforms other pure LLMs, such as GPT-4, on STEM questions.
    • For example, we observe a 27% absolute increase in accuracy over GPT-4 on an official practice ACT math section, which is the difference between a C- (69%) and A+ (96%) student. However, note that performance does vary across tasks and is not 100% accurate. We’re actively working to continue to improve the performance of YouAgent.
    • To learn more about YouAgent and view initial benchmarks, you can read our detailed blog post introducing YouAgent.
  • How do I get access to YouAgent? How many times can I use YouAgent daily?
    • To access YouAgent, you must either log in or purchase a YouPro subscription. You can use the trigger words “@agent” or “/agent” to use YouAgent.
    • If you are logged in to You.com, you have up to five uses of YouAgent over a 24-hour period. If you become a YouPro subscriber, you have up to 100 YouAgent queries every 24 hours.
  • How can I give feedback or make this better?

You can submit a request (recommended), send us an email at [email protected], or join our Discord community! We look forward to actively shaping the future of YouAgent with our community.

  • What is YouAgent?

YouAgent is a powerful multi-step reasoning agent that can answer mathematical and scientific questions more reliably by writing and executing code. YouAgent has been shown to outperform GPT-4 on various STEM benchmarks.

  • What is an agent? How is this related to You.com?

The term “agent” comes from the machine learning community’s term for an AI that not only observes its environment but also takes action within that environment. Agents, in the context of AI, are associated with action. Since its founding, you.com has aimed to be a Do-Engine that can help people actually get things done, and YouAgent is the next major milestone on the path towards that vision.

  • How do I use YouAgent?

You can use YouAgent by starting your query with “@agent”. That will tell you.com that you would like it to act, which today means answering your question by taking multiple steps and executing Python code in a computing environment.

  • What should I use YouAgent for?

In general, you should use YouAgent for more complicated questions that would benefit from multiple steps of reasoning, particularly if mathematical operations are involved. YouAgent has access to a code execution environment, which allows it to answer STEM questions more reliably than other LLMs, including GPT-4. As we add more capabilities and actions within YouAgent, you’ll be able to continuously do more with YouAgent.

If you are a student, you may find YouAgent’s ability to break down complicated STEM questions into steps and then solve each step using a computational environment to be educational. YouAgent can be used for learning how to approach problems in various mathematical / scientific domains, for solving problems in a step-by-step manner, and for checking your own solutions to STEM problems. Students who are familiar with Python and have taken a coding class will be best positioned to understand YouAgent’s reasoning process, though students unfamiliar with Python or coding can still benefit by reading through YouAgent’s steps and conclusions.

YouWrite

  • What Is YouWrite?

YouWrite is an AI-powered writing assistant available on You.com that can help you generate copy, no matter your level of experience. Whether you’re struggling with writer’s block or just looking for a way to improve your overall writing style, YouWrite can help. Simply input any word, phrase, or sentence into the app and watch as it transforms into new copy.

  • How does YouWrite work?

YouWrite uses a large neural network machine learning model to create human-like text. The model is trained on a large body of real-world texts to develop realistic and natural-sounding sentences.

  • How much does YouWrite cost and how do subscriptions work?

The basic plan costs $3.99/month and the plus plan costs $7.99/month. The basic plan allows for 250 writings per month and the plus plan allows for 1,000 writings per month. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in a custom enterprise plan. It is currently only available to buy in the United States and Canada.

Subscriptions start immediately after purchasing and will automatically renew on the same day at the same time of the following month.

Example: If you start a subscription on January 31, 2023, your subscription will renew on February 28, March 31, April 30, May 31, and so on. Notice it defaults to the max date of a month if a specific month does not have as many days.

Unused generations do not rollover to the following month.

You can cancel at any time by emailing [email protected]. Make sure to include cancel in the subject line and to send the email at least 24 hours before renewal time. If you cancel, you still have the remainder of your subscription month to use your generation.

  • How can I find YouWrite?

YouWrite is available by going directly to you.com/write or you.com/youwrite. There is also a quick link to it on the You.com homepage at the top. You can also find the YouWrite tab on the left side of the search results page.

  • Why does a search engine have a writing tool?

You.com is the search engine that puts you in control of your time, sources, and privacy. But, we’re more than a search engine — we’re a do-engine, meaning we think you should be able to search less and do more. You can use You.com to quickly find what you need without worrying about being tracked or bombarded with ads. Plus, our unique features like YouWrite make it easy for you to get things done in one place.

  • Is the content original?

Yes. Each output from YouWrite is unique, but you should always do your own fact-checking, verification, and editing. After all, it’s an AI-powered writing assistant, not a replacement. At the moment, YouWrite does not utilize an official plagiarism checker. This is a feature we hope to launch in the future.

  • Is the output accurate?

YouWrite is built on a large natural language model. We cannot guarantee that it will always be accurate. You should always do your own fact-checking.

  • Will YouWrite have more features in the future?

Yes we hope to add more features in the future! We’d love to hear your ideas regarding what you would like to see.

  • Where can I share feedback?

We always welcome feedback, and we appreciate hearing from you. You can reach us at [email protected]. Be sure to include feedback in the subject line.
