Does the Chrome extension invade my privacy?

No. There are currently two extensions made by you.com:

  1. You.com
  2. You.com | Search, chat, and create with AI

The first doesn’t require any access. It simply changes your default search engine to you.com.

The second is less privacy focused. It requires more permissions to direct your search to your selected search engine such as YouCode, YouChat or Google.

In spirit of our principles of trust, facts and kindness, we have made this extension open source. View the code here, including how we’re using these enhanced permissions.

You can verify permissions for each one during the installation when it lists its requirements. We do not ask for any permission that is not needed to fulfill the single purpose of the extension.

Below are the justifications of why we need each permission.

  • declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess: Needed to forward the user to the appropriate search engine (the one the user selected) in the UI.
  • storage justification: Storage is required to store the current default search engine.
  • Host permission justification: Host is needed to forward the user to the appropriate search engine (the one the user selected) in the UI.
