Your Trading Agent Should Read Before It Buys: Accessing You.com Over x402 on Base

TLDR: The You.com MCP Server gives AI agents access to fresh web and news intelligence through an x402-enabled endpoint on Base. Using an x402-compatible wallet, an agent can research a company, ticker, sector, or event, pay for the request in USDC when required, and use the cited results to inform its next action, all without generating an API key, managing a subscription, or completing a manual checkout. An Agent Only Knows What It Was Trained On
Ask a trading agent to evaluate a position, and it will answer confidently, using whatever it learned before its training cutoff. That's a problem in markets that change by the hour, and an even bigger one in crypto, where a protocol upgrade, an exchange listing, or a regulatory filing can change the thesis before the agent finishes their sentence. An agent that trades without checking current information is guessing with old data.
Coinbase’s Payments MCP solves the first half of this problem—agents now have a wallet and a way to spend from it without a human in the loop. The second half, however, is to verify that the agent has something worth paying for before committing capital.
Connecting an x402-Compatible Wallet
With an x402-compatible wallet, an agent can pay for You.com requests without first creating and managing a traditional You.com API key. Popular x402 clients include AgentCash, Orthogona (YC 26)l, Ampersend.ai, Heyseal.ai, Locus (YC25), and Pay.sh.
Coinbase Payments MCP is one way to give an agent an x402-compatible wallet. It lets supported AI clients create and fund a wallet, discover x402-enabled services, and authorize USDC payments through natural-language interactions. In this example, Payments MCP supplies the wallet while You.com supplies the paid research endpoint.
x402 is the piece doing the work underneath. It revives the HTTP "402 Payment Required" status code, allowing an API to specify its price directly in the response header. An agent that hits a 402 reads the price, decides whether the call is worth it, and, if it is, pays over stablecoin rails. There is no manual key generation, subscription, or checkout flow that a human has to click through first.
Payments MCP answers the question of how an agent pays. It doesn't answer what's worth paying for. That's where the web search side comes in.
What the You.com MCP Server Adds
The You.com MCP Server exposes the Web Search API to any agent that connects to it—live over x402. Where a standard web search returns a list of links for the agent to sort through, Web Search returns structured, LLM-optimized search results from web and news sources.
The Web Search API excels at delivering fresh, recent information. It returns structured JSON with two main result types:
Web results
- Relevant web pages from across the internet
- Multiple text snippets per result for context
- Publication dates
- Thumbnail images and favicons for UI display
News results
- Recent news articles from authoritative sources
- Article summaries and headlines
- Publication timestamps for freshness
- Associated images and metadata
Say a trading agent is sizing a position in NVDA and export controls just changed. Instead of trading on stale training data or burning a dozen tool calls stitching together search results, the agent asks the You.com MCP Server to research NVDA's exposure to the new controls. It gets back one report: what changed, what it means for the company's exposure, and the sources behind the analysis. The agent reads that report, and then decides whether to size the position, hedge it, or wait.
At machine-scale pricing, timely research can become a low-cost risk-control step before an autonomous agent acts.

How the x402 Research Flow Works
Neither MCP server needs to know the other exists. Payments MCP supplies the wallet. The You.com MCP Server supplies the endpoint and returns a 402 when payment is due. Your agent sits in between, reasoning about both.
The flow looks like this:
- Connect the You.com MCP Server to your agent (api.you.com/mcp).
- Connect Payments MCP so the agent has a funded wallet.
- Prompt your agent to research a position before it acts—for example, "evaluate NVDA's exposure to the latest export controls before you size this trade."
- The You.com MCP Server returns the report. If your agent is working from a free allotment, the call draws down from that balance.
- Once that balance runs out, the API responds with a 402 and a payment request. Your agent pays over x402 from the wallet Payments MCP already set up, and the information keeps flowing.

Setting It Up
Both MCP servers are installed the same way. Just point your agent's config to the server URL and authenticate the wallet side via Payments MCP's email sign-in. There's no API key to generate or rotate on the You.com side. The agent authenticates each request using the payment signature itself, since with x402 the credential and the payment are part of the same handshake.

Why This Matters
A wallet without fresh information gives an agent the ability to spend, but not necessarily the context to spend well. Research without machine-native payments still leaves developers managing API keys, subscriptions, accounts, and billing relationships. You.com and x402 bring those capabilities together: an agent can request current intelligence, evaluate the cost, pay for access, and use the result within predefined wallet and trading policies.
